Any mental health disorder can cause thoughts about suicide, also known as
suicidal ideation. Sometimes people who don’t have a mental health
diagnosis, but who suffer from chronic physical illness or pain, or who have
experienced a drastic life change or loss, can have these thoughts too.
Sometimes people have passive thoughts about suicide, such as:
Thinking that it would be better to not exist.
Thinking that if something happened and they died it wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
Thoughts that people would be better off without them.
Sometimes people have active suicidal ideation, which means:
Thinking about actually killing themselves.
Thinking about how they might want to do it.
Making a plan for when and how to do it.
Making arrangements for pets or belongings.
Feeling unsafe, or having fears of going through with it.
Writing a suicide note.
Suicidal ideation should always be taken seriously, whether it is passive or
active, but active suicidal ideation is an emergency. Please call 988 or go to
the nearest emergency room.
If you are having passive suicidal thoughts, we can help.

Suicidal Ideation Q&A
Someone I know seems like they are having mental health problems, and I’m worried about them. What should I do?
If you are worried about someone’s
mental health, here’s what to do: Ask to speak with them privately. Ask how
they are doing. Give them time to talk, and really listen to them. If they tell you
they are struggling with their mental health, let them know that mental health
problems are really common, and that help is available. Let them know that
they can call 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, for free, confidential
support 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Let them know that psychiatric
care and psychotherapy can really help. Give them our number: 303-736-
9697 and let them know they can call or text us to make an appointment.
Check in with them from time to time, and offer to listen if they need to talk.
Someone confided in me that they are thinking about suicide. What should I do?
If someone tells you they are having thoughts of suicide, here’s how you can help:
Listen, take them seriously, and stay with them if at all possible
Get help from other friends, family members, or trusted people so you’re not
alone, and so you can take turns staying with them if necessary
Help them secure firearms and other dangerous items so they won’t have access
Call 988 or take them to the nearest Emergency Room
I’m having serious thoughts of suicide. What should I do in this situation?
If you are
having serious thoughts of suicide and feel you might be in danger of acting
on them, here’s what to do:
Tell a trusted person, like a friend, family member, or teacher, so they can help
If you have firearms in your house, give them to a friend or family member to
hold for you until you feel better, or get rid of them altogether

your home that you might try to use to harm yourself
